The opening skit on Saturday Night Live last night was a parody of Obama’s State of the Union address, and the show’s writers did not spare Martha Coakley.
Fred Armisen (as President Obama) had lines including:
- “Our nominee, Martha Coakley, was the single most incompentent candidate ever to seek public office in this nation’s history.”
- “Shame on you, Martha Coakley!”
- “Martha Coakley you are a disgrace. You couldn’t beat Dick Cheney for Mayor of Berkeley!”
- “You deserved to lose, Martha. You stunk up the joint!”
Now, on my old blog I routinely killed Coakley for her campaign strategy, but even I cringed a little watching this last night.

Isn’t that story a little stale? At this point in time, Martha Coakley is in the bin where losing candidates go to collect dust. Bringing her up for a joke is lousy comedy. Now, when the next election actually rolls around, then it might be timely, but not now.
Ouch…didn’t see that when it was on. It’s a cheap shot, but she’ll have to take her lumps I suppose. She was a good candidate, just a bad campaigner.
I think it was also kind of making fun of the Democratic strategy. Anyways, Jon Stewart was a much better analysis of why Coakley stank up the joint.
Hmmmm… An interesting thought — Dick Cheney as Mayor of Berkeley.
Someone, please ask him if he is interested.
